Abstract

In this study, a lithium orthosilicate-based sorbent, as well as supported bifunctional catalysts Ni/Li4SiO4 and modified systems Ni-Ce/Li4SiO4 and Ni-Mg/Li4SiO4, were synthesized, and their catalytic properties were investigated in the integrated CO2 capture and conversion to methane process. The Li4SiO4 sorbent was prepared by the alkali fusion method. Among the synthesized sorbents, the highest CO2 sorption capacity, reaching 33%, was observed for the sample with a molar ratio of SiO2:LiOH = 1:4, in which the lithium orthosilicate content was 90%. Among the investigated bifunctional catalysts, the 15NiO-5MgO/Li4SiO4 sample exhibited the highest catalytic activity. For the developed bifunctional catalyst, the maximum CH4 selectivity reached 61.4% at 500 °C, however, it decreased to 44.8% when the temperature was increased to 600 °C. The decline in CH4 selectivity at higher temperatures is attributed to the reduced catalytic activity caused by the decomposition of carbonate phases, as confirmed by thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA–DTA). According to the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the phases NiO and Li4SiO4 were formed in the 15NiO-5MgO/Li4SiO4 bifunctional catalyst, performing catalytic and sorption functions, respectively. After the reaction, the catalyst retained its overall phase stability, while the reduction of nickel oxide (NiO) to metallic nickel (Ni⁰) was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The CO2-TPD analysis revealed that the developed bifunctional catalyst possesses medium-strength basic sites responsible for the efficient adsorption of CO2, as well as strong basic sites that promote CO2 activation and its subsequent hydrogenation. It was established that these sites exhibit a synergistic interaction with the catalytic centers of nickel, thereby ensuring the high performance of the bifunctional catalyst in the integrated processes of carbon dioxide capture and conversion.
